Replaces equivalent FPIWPP3220B Plan and coordinate panel painting, which was first released with FPI11 Forest and Forest Products Training Package Version 2.2.

This is the first release of this unit in the new standards format.

Application

This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to manage operational logistics for the roller coating, curtain coating and spray painting lines.

The unit applies to production operators and technicians who plan and coordinate panel painting in a forest and wood products setting and also involves monitoring and evaluating processes and problems to determine improvements.

No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Plan painting operations

1.1 Review and interpret work orders to determine production requirements.

1.2 Develop painting schedules and communicate to operators in line with organisational procedures.

1.3 Plan and schedule equipment settings and operations.

1.4 Plan and prescribe control measures to minimise waste of paint and additives.

1.5 Identify, monitor and assess variations in paint mixtures.

2. Coordinate painting operations

2.1 Direct operators to load and unload painting equipment.

2.2 Coordinate paint application and curing processes and monitor for quality finish and completion rates.

2.3 Check paint line performance and interpret data to ensure accuracy and intended coverage.

2.4 Modify schedules to ensure optimum and cost effective production outcomes and communicate changes to operators.

2.5 Coordinate the disposal of excess paint in line with environmental protection practices.

2.6 Direct correct processes for cleaning painting equipment to ensure compliance with organisational safety procedures and environmental protection practices.

2.7 Investigate, record and report major processing and equipment faults and resolve or report to appropriate personnel

3. Evaluate and modify painting processes.

3.1 Monitor and evaluate painting operations and output to determine process improvements.

3.2 Analyse systematic problems with plant, equipment, paints and panels for potential to improve painting processes.

3.3 Document recommended process improvements, communicate to appropriate personnel and seek approval.

3.4 Trial new processes, document outcomes and introduce appropriate system changes.

Replaces equivalent FPIWPP3220B Plan and coordinate panel painting, which was first released with FPI11 Forest and Forest Products Training Package Version 2.2. This is the first release of this unit in the new standards format.

Assessment requirements now specify the performance and knowledge evidence, as well as assessment conditions for this unit of competency. These sections simplify and replace components used in the previous unit format, including Required Skills and Knowledge, Evidence Guide and Range Statement.

Performance Evidence

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit.  If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:

  • plan and coordinate panel painting operations for production jobs in line with different work orders for each job
  • determine, document and communicate painting schedules for each of the above jobs
  • monitor, assess and modify schedules in response to changing circumstances within each of the above production jobs
  • complete a detailed report about systematic issues arising across the jobs covering problems with processes, plant, equipment, paints and panels including recommendations for process improvements.

Knowledge Evidence

A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

  • environmental protection practices for painting panels:
  • reducing water and energy use
  • cleaning plant, tools and equipment
  • disposing of hazardous substances
  • operational capacity of and cleaning requirements for painting production lines:
  • roller coating lines
  • spray booths
  • curtain coating lines
  • stages in the painting production line process
  • methods of determining painting schedules to maximise:
  • equipment and labour use
  • volume return from paint
  • efficient handling of panels to be painted
  • control measures to minimise waste of paint and additives
  • methods used to:
  • assess painting processes for quality of outcomes
  • diagnose and analyse systematic problems with plant, equipment, paints and panels
  • format, content and use of:
  • painting schedules
  • process improvement reports
  • organisational procedures specific to planning and coordinating panel painting operations:
  • communication reporting lines for paint operator team members and self
  • documenting painting schedules and reports
  • recording and reporting systematic equipment faults.

Assessment Conditions

The following resources must be made available:

  • computers, keyboards, printers and software used to prepare planning and production documents
  • painting production lines
  • personal protective equipment suitable for coordinating painting lines
  • panels which must include at least one of the following:
  • medium density fibreboard
  • chipboard
  • fibreboard
  • plywood
  • paint which must include at least one of the following:
  • water based
  • oil based
  • solvent based
  • template:
  • painting schedules
  • process improvement reports
  • records for equipment faults
  • work order with specific instructions for painting panels
  • organisational procedures for planning and coordinating panel painting operations
  • a team of operators with whom the individual can interact
  • relevant personnel for the purposes of communicating information

Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting. Painting operations must be present in order that the individual can monitor, assess and modify schedules in response to changing circumstances.

Assessor requirements 

Assessors must:

  • hold the appropriate assessor competency standards as outlined in regulations; and
  • be able to demonstrate vocational competencies at least to the level being assessed; and
  • be able to demonstrate how they are continuing to develop their VET knowledge and skills as well as maintaining their industry currency and assessor competence.
